Chapter 10
«^»
One of the advantages of living in the country was the fact that your neighbors left their doors unlocked, Colleen decided as she used her foot to push open the back door of the Larsen ranch house and stepped into the kitchen. Unlocked doors eliminated the messy task of breaking and entering.
One of the disadvantages of living in the country was the fact that everybody knew everybody else, she thought as she carried her two sacks of groceries to the counter, sighing with relief as she set them down. Another trip to her car, to bring in a bottle of wine and a carefully arranged bouquet of flowers. They joined the groceries on the counter.
She surveyed her booty with satisfaction. The food, the wine and the flowers had all been purchased in a town nearly an hour's drive away. If she'd bought them locally, there'd have been a chance that someone would mention to Kel that his little sister had been buying wine and flowers and then Kel would have asked her about it. She certainly didn't want to lie to him, but she could hardly tell him that she was planning on seducing his best friend.
It had been two weeks since she'd seen Gun after his father's funeral. It seemed like about a thousand years. She understood why he hadn't come to see her. At least, she hoped she understood. Kel had told her about Ben Larsen's will. Remembering Gun's comment about how much he missed the ranch, she'd been thrilled to hear that he was finally able to come home again.
Kel had been to see Gun the day before, and at dinner he'd told her and Megan what Gun was up against, inadvertently giving Colleen an explanation for Gun's absence. In the past few years, Ben had been letting things slide. Fences and equipment hadn't been repaired; the stock had received only cursory care; in places, the cattle had been allowed to overgraze. It would take years to repair the damage done to the range in those areas.
Gun was going to have his hands full, Kel had said, shaking his head over the condition of the ranch. And with spring calving in full swing, it was going to be a while before he'd have time to draw a full breath. At least, it looked as though his stepmother wasn't going to cause problems. She'd left for New York the day after the funeral and hadn't been heard from since.
It was that piece of information that had resulted in Colleen's presence in Gun's kitchen now. If Vanessa was gone, Gun was alone in the house. And if Gun was alone in the house, there was nothing to stop her from paying him a visit.
It was the neighborly thing to do, she told herself. Though "neighborly" might not Be exactly the right word for the black silk panties and bra hidden under her jeans and teal green cotton shirt. She'd been tempted to wear a dress, preferably
